Spiritual Wedding Vows Marking the Beginning of Your Marriage

There are many similarities and some differences between spiritual wedding vows and religious wedding vows.  In general the world religious refers to an organized set of beliefs and cultic rituals professed by a group of people within a formal structure.  In this way Christian wedding vows, Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu, Mormon, etc., are religious wedding vows because they originate and are used by people adhering to their respective religions.  Spiritual vows, on the other hand, bypass religious boundaries.  They focus on God, Higher Power, Ultimate Reality, Something or Someone that is immaterial, eternal, and in some way, presumably a friendly beneficial way, relates to the humankind, namely, the couples entering into marriage.  But spiritual is not simply freed from church, temple, or synagogue.  It implies all kinds of metaphysical beliefs including New Age, Earth worshipers, neo-pagans, etc.

On a practical level, however, for most prospective brides and grooms spiritual vows encompass a direct or indirect reference to God.  It is a kind of God that doesn’t belong to any religion or denomination.  A God that is present around and within us and will certainly be present in a mysterious but real manner during the wedding ceremony.  A God that is hard or impossible to define, All-Holy, yet amazingly familiar, close to us and certainly benevolent.  It is such a God that a couple opting for spiritual wedding vows wants to refer to and be present in their married life.
