"...I
take thee...according to God's holy ordinance ."
Protestant marriage vows are
essentially Christian marriage promises. This is not a revelation
to those who are familiar with the Church or general history.
Yet, as obvious as it is to some, to others, especially those coming
from different religious backgrounds it might not be self evident that
Catholics, Protestants, or other groups confessing Jesus as their divine
Savior and the Son of God are all Christians. .
Traditionally Christianity encompasses three major branches:
Catholicism, Protestantism, and Orthodox Christianity.
So for any practical reasons Protestant wedding vows are simply an
autonomous version of Christian marriage promises.

I (the name of the Groom), take thee, (the name of
the Bride),
to be my wedded husband (wife ),
to have and to hold, from this day forward,
for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer,
in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part,
according to God's holy ordinance;
and thereto I pledge thee my faith/myself to you.
