Whether Funny Wedding Vows Are Appropriate for Your Special Day

In the past decade or so, especially with the expansion of the Internet, there is a noticeable search for the funny wedding vows.  The interest in somewhat entertaining or amusing wedding vows did not originate by itself.  Rather there has been a trend to make the wedding ceremony a relaxed, easy going and a fun event.  This is certainly a reaction to the traditional celebrations of wedding ceremonies that for the most part would be rather serious.  Some couples planning their marriage ceremony think about ideas how to make this special event memorable, unique and, not the least important, likable to their families and friends. Sometimes it is just the notion of being different than the most of other brides and grooms locking their lives in marriage.  Yet, it is highly questionable whether the so-called “funny wedding vows” pertain to the wedding ceremony of people who are interested in the deeper meaning of the marriage celebration and the realization of what is taking place in their lives.  There is something in the funny wedding vows that stands in contrast to the deeply spiritual meaning of the wedding itself.  While the wedding party should be fun almost by definition, not so with the wedding ceremony.  The primary impression coming from the wedding ceremony is that of dignity, beauty, profound meaning deriving from the uniting of two lives into one shared experience.

The above is not intended to imply  that brides or grooms searching for funny wedding vows are necessarily devoid of depth or totally unspiritual.  Well seasoned, appropriate and sporadic humor during the wedding ceremony is just fine and well-received by couples and their guests.  Yet, both you as the bride or the groom, your friends and families will appreciate your marriage ceremony, especially from the perspective of time, much better if you go for non comical wedding vows.  Choose,  either traditional, religious, non-religious, civil, or personalized wedding promises instead of funny vows.  Embellish your wedding ceremony with depth rather than fun.  The fun is what it is and disappears while the depth remains.  Fun and joke are closely related words.  Think about it!

After somewhat denigrating funny wedding vows it needs to be admitted that humorous, comical or hilarious wording of marriage promises still has its place.  The funny wedding vows make a great idea to incorporate into the wedding reception, perhaps after the speeches and the toast. Obviously, hilarious phrases exchanged by the bride and groom pretending to be vows will add laugher and entertainment to the guests without taking away dignity of the wedding ceremony itself.
